growing cherry tomatoes in a pot

growing cherry tomatoes in containers

Growing cherry tomatoes in a pot is very easy, whether you choose a greenhouse, grow bag or wish to choose a pot because of the limited space. Those having grown their own fruits before will know the joy when the first shoots start to appear. Those of you who are beginners, after growning cherry tomatoes in a pot, will understand the benefits of home grown produce.

It is easy to start by obtaining some small pots. They can be grown on the windowsill, balcony or using larger pots and placing them outside alongside a sunny wall. You could start by buying seeds or go to the local nursery garden and obtain some fungal free tomato plants, ask for the best cherry variety. Choosing small ready plants will help ensure your success and get you to the most important part, picking and eating the ripe fruit. Planting and care are the most essential part to growing any fruit or vegetable.

Choosing pots

Basic pots such as the normal plastic variety that you buy your baby plants in are alright; if choosing to grow the plants outside in a sunny position, clay pots can sometimes be better. As the plant starts to grow and staking the plant has taken place, the heavier the pot the better. If you have any old clay pots, break these up and put pieces in the bottom before the soil, this acts as good drainage.

After you have bought your pots and while picking your plants, ask for a good potting mix important to prepare good potting compost to get the best results. Also you will need tomato plant food essential for the plants to get the nutrients they need, and lastly sticks for staking the plants as they start to grow. A good tip before planting is to get an old tub and put some compost in and plant food and give it a good mix around then place in the pots.

Planting cherry plant

Once all this has been done you can now fill your pots depending on size this is basically the same, fill your pots three quarters full. Make a well in the center and after gently removing your plants from pots you bought them in, place them in your new pot picking off any leaves that are touching the soil. Press the plant down firmly and pack more soil around as necessary, when you have finished this give the plant a good watering.

After usually the first two weeks you will notice your tomatoes have started to grow rapidly, you will notice very little leaves shooting out these are called lateral branches and have to be carefully removed, or they will spoil the crop. At this point it is best to start watering the plants daily, you may also find as they have grown that you will have to carefully re-pot them into a bigger pot. Keep them in a sunny position and water possibly every third day depending on the weather, not to let the roots get to soggy.

When growing cherry tomatoes in a pot you should know that most tomato plants which ever variety they are will at some point get green fly or insect problem. If this occurs ask at your local garden center for the best insecticide for tomato plants. Not every insecticide is the same. Enjoy growing cherry tomatoes in a pot.
