backyard gardening tips

ideas for backyard

Perhaps the best backyard gardening tips is to have fun. It’s your private space and it’s meant to be enjoyed your way. There are no rules here.

Avid gardeners know there is more than one way to create a beautiful garden or backyard vegetable garden. In fact, one of the pleasures that keeps calling us outside to enjoy the garden is the freedom to enjoy our own little patch of heaven on earth in exactly the way we desire.

It’s perfectly acceptable to explore different styles of gardening in different locations around our own homes. For most of us, the front yard is the most visible and so the more formal looking showcase of our gardening talents. It’s here that we can reflect our personal style but we also use the front-yard garden to make a statement about ourselves and our lifestyles.

Things can be a little more relaxed in the backyard, though.

One of the best-loved backyard gardening tips is to enjoy this more private oasis with no rules, styles, or statements in mind. Explore. Experiment. Play.

Go wild in the back yard! Experiment with a riot of colors chosen just because you like them and not because they match anything. Or each other.

Try something new in the back yard first and expand new gardening skills to the front yard once you’ve mastered the details. Perhaps try a cactus or rose garden out of sight and in privacy before reworking the front yard.

Other backyard gardening tips take advantage of the often close proximity the back yard to the kitchen. Keep the front yard ready for company but make the back yard an extension of the kitchen. Plant herbs near the back door so they are handy for cooking. Find a sunny spot and fill it with vegetables and fruits that will bring joy and delight to the garden and more of the same to the dinner table at harvest time.

Backyard gardening can help delight other senses, too. Many of us enjoy the privacy and seclusion of the back yard as a respite from the frenzied world outside the garden gate. We can enhance the pleasure of our escape by turning the back yard into a place for relaxation and tranquility.

Soothing sounds to incorporate in your backyard garden may include a gently gurgling pond or water fountain. A bird feeder or shelter of any sort will keep the songbirds serenading you with their cheerful tunes. Hanging a wind chime in a strategic spot or two will certainly bring a smile as a gentle breeze comes dancing along.

Plant fragrant flowers and plants near a favorite backyard seating area. Gardenias, citrus flowers, lilacs, and many herbs such as mint, lemon balm, and rosemary will add even more dimension to your private retreat. Plants that bloom late in the afternoon or evening, such as aromatic four-o’clocks and moonflowers keep your backyard garden perfumed and inviting from morning to night.

Put some fun in your backyard garden with garden gnomes and fairies tucked playfully around the yard. Add a touch of whimsy to this more relaxed part of your home with butterflies, frogs, turtles, and figurines that depict other favorite animals of the forest.

Try an altar in your backyard garden. Your private outdoor sanctuary might include a statue of St. Francis, watching over you, your garden, and all the creatures that share it with you. Or a happy Buddha deep in meditation to bring health, wealth, and prosperity to your backyard oasis and beyond.
