Patio Gardening

Patio gardening is one of the many different ways to have a garden, and you should be able to choose the perfect way for you.

Many people canot afford to start out with a green house and everything else to have a completely controlled system, however, so outdoor hydroponics may be used instead.

First of all, when you looking at patio garden, you are going to be able to have complete freedom over the type of garden that you want to have. It will allow you to make the most out the room you've got on the patio, and grow some scrumptious foods at the same time.

Which Plants to grow

The plants that you use are going to depend on two things , first of all, the depth of the pots you are using to plant in, and second of all, the amount of sunlight that the area receives. With deep enough pots and the right type of sunlight, you can grow just about any type of plant.

Therefore, the first thing to do is to look at the sunlight on your patio. Does it get the same types of sunlight as a regular plot would meaning some parts of the day with full sun and some parts of the day with partial sun? If so, then you can grow just about anything. However, some of the more traditional plants to grow on the patio might include flowers that don't need full sun, or even some veggies that grow fine without it, like beans, peas, and the like.

Next, look at the plants you intend to pot, and decide how deep your containers should be. Potatoes can't grown on the patio because of the depth needed, but tomato plants grow well as long as the pot is large enough for their root structure to take hold. Other types of veggies can be the same way. Most flowers and many of the herbs like rosemary and the like can grow easily in patio gardens.

Soil

You can use the best quality soil that you can find, so that you will be sure to have excellent plant growth. It is important to buy vegetable quality potting soil, so that the plants you put into the pots will have all of the nutrients. Remember that since they aren't in the ground, they won't have any of the natural nutrients that are found there, so you'll have to create it artificially.

Watering

It is often easier to water patio gardens because you'll see them every day and they are closer to you. This allows you to have the ultimate control over when things are watered. Water by hand, in the morning and at dusk, for best results.

Pests and Disease

With patio gardening, you'll need to be sure to take measures to get rid of pests. You shouldn't have as many to deal with, but bugs are still an issue. Take the time that you need to make sure your plants are pest free naturally.
