Organic lawn care

Natural Lawn Care

Many people are going with organic lawn care or chemical free lawn care for their lawn as a way to avoid not worrying about the effects of pesticides and herbicides in the ground and ground water. Those that have children and pets are particularly aware of the dangers of pesticides. The solution that most agree on is the use of organic pesticides and organic lawn care products. These products protect the environment for future generations and yet provide the lawn.

lawn care tips

The first line of defense for any lawn is to keep it healthy. A healthy lawn fights most of its enemies and needs little outside aid. In order to have the healthiest lawn possible you need to find out more about the soil. Use a soil test that tells you the pH of the soil, the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the soil and the level of organic material and micronutrients and when you need to add organic lawn fertilizer.

Aerated lawn

Once you find out this information you can add whatever your soil requires to be at its best for growing grass. If, for example, you have sandy soil, then your tests often show low organic activity. This isnot difficult to remedy if you simply add a little compost at both the beginning and the end of the season.

Many organic lawn care products operate on the same principal. Keep your soil healthy and you will have a healthy lawn. Many of the products contain nutritional organic material to bring your lawn to the ultimate in lushness. Often there are mechanical devices to aid you in eliminating weeds. Beneficial insects are also part of the organic lawn care products. These insects are natural predators to many of the pests and to those that attract pests. Grubs, for instance are a favorite snack for moles and skunks. Beneficial nematodes kill the grubs and eliminate the moles and skunks.

home made lawn care products

If you want to make your own home made lawn care products, here are two organic lawn care recipes that you can make in your kitchen. The first is an organic lawn fertilizer and the second is an organic weed control.

Freshly mowed lawn

You need a full can of regular full calorie beer, a can of inexpensive full calorie cola, ½ cup of ammonia, ½ cup of regular dishwashing liquid but donot use the antibacterial type and ½ cup of mouthwash. Mix this up and put it in a hose-end sprayer. When its hot out, apply it every three weeks.

You can control lawn weeds if you use 2 cups of ammonia mixed with 2 cups of liquid dishwashing soap and 4 tablespoons of instant tea (no sugar or lemon). Put it in a hose-end sprayer and spray during the hottest part of the day.

You donot have to add more pollution to the environment with organic lawn care, worry about the health of your children or pets or even endanger your own health if you use natural lawn care products. Organic lawn care does involve a little more effort with soil tests before you begin, but even that is the key to success and a beautiful lawn. Once you know what your grass needs to be healthy and provide it, the hardest part of your summer will be keeping the grass mowed.
