Growing Citrus Trees inside

Planting Citrus Trees

There is nothing more fun than starting and Growing Citrus Trees inside ,learning how to grow citrus trees, growing dwarf citrus trees. You donot need to have expensive equipment or even go to a garden store to get your plants started. All you need to do is eat a citrus fruit and save the seeds. These types of trees are not meant to grow and produce inside and may eventually become too large for your growing area.

Another alternative to growing citrus trees inside, if you want the tree to remain small, is to use a special breed of dwarf trees. These types of trees have the same minimum requirements of sunlight but are small enough to adapt to smaller spaces. If you have a large area with a cathedral ceiling, you can start the plants from seed.

Start citrus From Seed.

Remove the seeds from the fruit of your choice. Rinse the seeds carefully to remove any of the pulp. Dry them. Fill a cup half way with paper towel. Moisten the toweling and then put in several layers of seed. Top the seeds with more towel to the top and moisten it. You want the towel damp but not dripping. Cover the container with a plastic bag.

Check the toweling for dampness daily. Keep the cup in a warm area, above the refrigerator is ideal because it is dark and warm. Seeds donot need sunshine to germinate but they do need warmth. In about 10 to 14 days, if you lift the first paper towel, you will notice a root and stem forming on the seed. It is time to plant the seed in soil.

Bury the citrus seed just below the surface of the soil in a small pot filled with potting soil made for African Violets. Make sure the root system points toward the bottom. Use one seed per pot. The peat pots are best because you simply transplant the whole pot into the next container as the plant grows. This takes away the possibility of shock to the small plant. Make sure that the container allows for drainage.

Citrus Tree Care

Growing citrus tree indoor require the plant to be in a sunny area. They like full sun and do best in a Southern window. You wonot need to transplant the tree more than once per year and when you do, use the African violet potting soil and allow for drainage. If your plant fails to blossom after several years, you will need to skip repotting it for one year.

Temperature

If you put your citrus plants outside, wait until its at least 50 to 55 degrees during the night and 68 during the day. They actually like the temperatures slightly cooler than what most people keep their homes.

Watering

Water the plants daily, particularly when kept outside in the summer. If you water when the top of the soil is dry to the touch, make sure that you wait and allow the plant to drain. Remove any sitting water from the saucer or catch plate. If you have low humidity, mist often or set the trees on top of a pebble filled tray with water.

Additional Tips

When growing citrus trees inside or outdoor ,donot use a product to shine the leaves as it may damage them. If you keep the plant tip growth pruned, it makes the citrus tree bushier and keeps it more compact. This is important if you donot have a dwarf variety.

Citrus Fruit Trees

When growing citrus trees inside, you become the bee. Use a small paintbrush to pollinate the plant by hand. First, stroke the stamen then pistol of the flower and do this on every flower of the citrus tree. If you donot, then you will not have fruit.
