Dahlia storage
Dahlia plants. Dahlia storage is quiet easy, just like when dahlia plant grown in the garden, give it a spectacular look. However it requires a great amount of dahlia care. they are grown especially in summer and are excellent cut flowers. They are perennial and during the warm climate they grow well. However, during the cold climate the roots need to be dug up and the dahlia stored indoors. When the winter is over you can plant them again in the garden. Here are a few overwintering dahlia tips you can follow during winter. Dahlia storage needs a cool but a frost-free area. Cut the dahlias 4 to 6 inches above the soil. Dig dhalia tubers with the help of spade or spading fork. Take care not to damage the root system. Get rid of the excess soil. Do not wash the tuber and take care that they don’t freeze. Check if there are any damaged or deceased tubers, if any discard them.
You can store tubers in the cardboard boxes. Add layer of vermiculite, saw dust, wood shavings or peat moss. Put a layer of dahlia on the two three layer of the manure. Storage temps is 35 to 45F. Tubers need to be kept in a darker place. Though they cannot withstand winter, they require the right temperature to grow. If they do not get the desired temperature, they may rot or sprout prematurely. You can store the dahlia in an unheated basement or garage or attic or crawl space or even in the refrigerator. You can also store the tubers in a plastic bag having holes on it. A loosely closed plastic bag can be also used or even a paper bag. If you are storing dahlia in a plastic wrap, you need to cut the plastic to 50cm in length. Place the plastic on the surface of a table. At one of the ends of the plastic place one tuber and roll it so that it’s completely covered. Add another tuber and roll it again. Keep doing this till you complete rolling five to six tubers. While rolling be careful and don’t allow the tubers to touch each other. Cover the ends of the tuber with a plastic wrap; they need to separate the tubers. You can use a masking tape to hold the plastic film. You can write the name of each variety on the plastic. This will make their identification easy. After wrapping and marking the tubers, store them in storage containers and the temperature should be 4 to 8 degrees C or 35 to 45F. Do not store the tubers in airtight containers. They will require air circulation for their growth. I would not say (storage winter dahlia tubers tips) but After storing the tubers, keep a periodic check on them. If there are any rotten tubers remove them immediately. Most of the tubers tend to rot due to the unfavorable temperature, so keep a check on the temperature range as well. You can place a min-max thermometer inside the storage container. If in process of dahlia storage, shriveling occurs, you can moisten the packaging lightly with water. If too much of rotting takes place during dahlia storage, you can move the tubers to a drier place.
